The MAN of the Week
Each month we'll pick someone, generally a public figure, who, through their action or inaction has made it clear that they have become the MAN.
As always, your suggestions are welcome; be sure to include who it is that you're nominating and why you're nominating them.
The MAN of the month for December 2000
Santa Claus
Why? Santa has been used for years to force free-spirited children to comply with their parent's wishes. The very concept of knowing who has been "bad or good" implies that there is only one way to behave. Anything else? Santa routinely leaves out lots of people based on their religious faith, plus, he once gave me a lump of coal.
The MAN of the month for October 2000
Becky Shell
of Krispy Kreme Donuts
Why? Becky is, apparently, responsible for stories on the Krispy Kreme website. One of my coworkers sent her a note about a Krispy Kreme contest and got shot down because Krispy Kreme does "not encourage donut eating contests because it is dangerous to consume any type of food that fast". Our contest lasted an hour each week; no one ever had to cram a donut to beat the deadline. Anything else? Becky has some serious grammer issues: "It sounds like your office is big fans of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts." As far as I know, our office has never eaten a Krispy Kreme although its carpet has sometimes been coated in excess sugar.
The MAN of the month for September 2000
Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey
of California's Sixth District
Picture courtesy of her Web Site
Why? Congresswoman Woolsey introduced HR 4892, which called for Congress to repeal the Federal Charter of the Boy Scouts of America. Woolsey also authored a letter (signed by over 10 of her 435 House colleagues) calling for President Bill Clinton to resign as honorary head of the Boy Scouts of America. Comeuppance? As it happens, her lovely bill was defeated by a vote of 362 to 12 (hey, would that be over ten?). Doubtless she'll continue to find ways to attack the Boy Scouts and their right to exclude gays, as supported by a recent Supreme Court decision supporting the BSA'a First Amendment rights. The Republican commentary (look at the ones marked "opposition") is pretty amusing and well aimed. Anything else? Check it out, I'm a Scout Leader and I'm supporting the right of a woman to be the MAN; guess we're not all bad after all.
